Prince Harry’s expected reunion with King Charles III is unlikely to slow down the healing of his fractured relationship with Prince William, according to several royal experts who scrutinize the dynamics within the royal family. The Duke of Sussex is set to visit the United Kingdom in July with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, marking their first family trip to Britain since 2022.However, Page Six reported on Monday that royal commentators remain pessimistic about the possibility of reconciliation between the two brothers during this visit. Amanda Matta, co-host of the podcast “Off With Their Headlines,” told the publication that ending a potential reconciliation between Harry and William at this stage would be premature.
Amanda Matta on the ‘strictest’ relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry
Matta described the relationship between William and Harry as the “strictest” of all the family dynamics currently playing out within the royal household. He pointed to William’s current position in the monarchy as a complicating factor in any potential reconciliation efforts.“William also tends to show strength and leadership these days, often resulting in press briefings where he opposes the king’s handling of emotional issues such as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and now, Harry’s potential return,” Matta explained to the publication.According to Matta’s assessment, the road to reconciliation will require William to adopt a different approach than he has in recent years. “For the brothers to bury the hatchet, William needs to approach the situation pragmatically rather than emotionally,” he said. “The exact opposite of King Charles’ approach. William held back for years, viewing Harry’s betrayal as unforgivable.”
Emily Nash’s view of Prince William and Prince Harry’s unlikely reunion
Royal reporter Emily Nash offered a similarly cautious view about the possibility of a sibling meeting during Harry’s visit. “I really don’t expect anything to happen during this visit,” Nash told the outlet, although he acknowledged the possibility of unexpected developments.Nash suggested that a reunion between William and Harry would require certain circumstances to occur. “If it’s part of a wider family gathering, it’s possible they could be in the same place at the same time. But, you know, given the divisive nature of the relationship between William and Harry, I don’t see them rushing back together just because Harry is back in the UK,” she said.Regarding the potential role of King Charles in facilitating reconciliation between his two sons, Nash indicated that the reigning monarch appears to be focused on his own goals. “I think maybe he’s just focused on his own time to spend time with the son he hasn’t seen in a long time, especially to be able to see his grandchildren. I’m sure that’s probably his main focus right now,” Nash said.
The conditions necessary for restoration
Matta suggested that a private meeting between William and Harry would serve as a meaningful indicator of progress. “If there is a private meeting between William and Harry, it will be a clear signal that the lines of communication have been reopened,” he said. However, Nash cautioned against expecting rapid changes in family dynamics. “These things have to happen step by step. If things are as difficult and as isolated in that family, I don’t expect things to change overnight,” the reporter said.
