Arya Babbarson of the veteran actor Raj Babbar and Nadira Babbar, opened up about one of the darkest chapters of her life, revealing that she once considered suicide and that her standup comedy act was rooted in her struggle with depression and family dysfunction. The actor-comedian recently shared a clip from his standup set on social media. While the video drew attention for a joke involving her estranged half-brother Prateik Smita Patil, Arya says the show’s bigger narrative is about survival, mental health and finding hope.
“I thought about trying to commit suicide and I survived it”
Talking about the premise of her work, Arya revealed that it stems from a deep personal experience.“It’s about a night where I thought about trying to kill myself and I survived it. The idea of doing this is ki aaj koi meri tarah aisi bewakoofi karne ki soch raha ho to use main bacha sakun,” he told Hindustan Times.According to Arya, the show explores her depression, family relationships and breakdowns within her personal life. She hopes that by speaking openly about her struggles, she can help someone who may be facing a similar emotional crisis.
A standup act born out of pain
Arya’s standup journey began in 2024, and he says that comedy has become a medium where he can discuss difficult topics that are often difficult to discuss in normal conversations. The actor believes that sharing his story publicly may encourage others to seek help instead of making irreversible decisions in moments of despair.
“Affairs happen, breakups happen and it’s okay”
Reflecting on the public scrutiny surrounding her family, Arya acknowledges that the Babbars have long remained the subject of public discussion.“There are other actors too whose parents are actors and their activities also come out. But unka topic of discussion nahi chal raha, bas hamara kyun chal raha hai pata nahi. But this is life and there is no point in hiding it. Events happen, separation happens and it’s okay. It’s not the end of life, and it’s not ‘the’ life that I see as positive,” he said.Despite the complexities of her family dynamics, Arya said she chooses to focus on gratitude and the lessons she’s learned through adversity.Note:: If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, seek immediate help from a mental health professional or a suicide prevention helpline.
