NEW DELHI: Jasprit Bumrah is set to make his long-awaited ODI comeback for India after being named in the 15-man squad for the three-match series against England starting July 14. The pace master, who was rested from the recently concluded series against Afghanistan as part of the work management, will spearhead India’s bowling threat in English.Bumrah’s comeback comes after a long spell in the 50-over format. Since losing to India in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 32-year-old has missed eight ODIs, which shows the BCCI’s caution in managing the number of key players.India played ODI series in South Africa and Sri Lanka in 2023-24 and 2024 respectively without Bumrah. Due to injuries and the BCCI’s management plan, he has been absent from the home series against England, the 2025 Champions Trophy, the Australian tour and the home matches against South Africa and New Zealand, before naming the Afghanistan series earlier this month. The decision to carefully monitor Bumrah’s workload has been influenced by his history of back injuries and the need to protect him from big games and multi-sport commitments. A fast bowler often takes a break from two countries to ensure he remains fit for the sport. With the next expansion of the ODI World Cup, Bumrah’s presence in England’s lineup represents a boost for India. His knowledge and ability to bat in all phases of an innings is invaluable in uncertain situations. The BCCI announced the squad on Sunday, with Shubman Gill as the captain and Shreyas Iyer as the vice-captain. Senior batsman Virat Kohli has returned to the squad, though his participation is still questionable following the stomach injury he sustained.
