‘Voicemails for Isabelle’ is a new romantic comedy film that landed on the streaming platform on June 19, 2026. Written and directed by Leah McKendrickthe movie stars Zoey Deutsch and: Nick Robinson. The story follows a young woman named Jill who copes with her brother’s death by leaving her dead brother’s voicemails, unaware that the phone number has been reassigned to a stranger who begins to fall in love with her through the messages.

Unwittingly, a mysterious real estate agent in Austin begins to receive these confessions. Jill and her sister Isabelle have a close relationship; Isabelle has been dealing with cystic fibrosis from a young age. They often communicate via voicemails, a new-age way of staying connected.

What director Leah McKendrick had to say about her creative vision
According to IndieWire, director Leah McKendrick discussed her approach. McKendrick revealed, “I’ve learned that it doesn’t help me to be eternally, blindly loyal to a script that doesn’t work.McKendrick also explained how the male lead fell for the protagonist. “He testifies to that courage [from Jill]”Said McKendrick: “That honesty of someone who is so deeply human, who wouldn’t love?”McKendrick discusses the core theme of the film. McKendrick said, “When I first wrote [the script]I haven’t found my man, and so it’s more than belonging and imagining what it would be like to find true love in romantic love. My sister is alive and well, she’s healthy, but it’s just inspired by her soulmate and she wants to write a love letter to sisterhood.”

Director McKendrick explains why voicemails are important to the story. “Voicemails cannot be edited or rewritten,” McKendrick said. “They are often chaotic, awkward, inarticulate – sometimes confessional. Like a stream of consciousness, they always go a little off the rails.”
