It always starts with the story. When asked if there was a particular scene in the film that brought back personal memories or evoked emotion, Suri didn’t limit it to just one moment. He said, “Honestly, it’s not about a scene or especially my scenes… The train station (which shows him returning to the station at a particular time every day, hoping for the arrival of his family), whether it’s waiting for the family or trying to return, I usually connect with those stories on a human level. Yes, there were moments in the film that touched me deeply on a personal level. The theme of displacement, loss and search for home are not abstract ideas for me. They are part of my family’s living history, including me as a 19 year old.
How important is the role of storytelling in addressing themes such as loss and identity?
He added, “The partition, the Kabali Raids in Baramullah (Kashmir) and then 1990… the experiences and stories of insecurity and the change in one’s world suddenly changed are passed down through the generations. from one’s roots, or carrying the sadness of generations, it is impossible for me to approach it as an actor, those emotions are already somewhere inside me and I go through the emotions as they are connected of my personal memories and family history.“
