The series is tied at 1-1 and the weather may play a big role in Nottingham, where the unusual British temperature of 31 C (88 F) is forecast and the dry conditions look good for the batsmen.
England are trying to settle after a difficult night for captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson after winning the first Test at Lord’s.
He was dropped for the second Test – a convincing win against the Kiwis last week – but was recalled to Nottingham, with Stokes taking over the captaincy from Joe Root. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith has returned from paternity leave and Shoaib Bashir is in as a spin, replacing Sonny Baker.
New Zealand have lost two key players – bowler Matt Henry and middle batsman Glenn Phillips – to injury, while pacer Kyle Jamieson is left to fend for himself after a recent back problem. Spinner Mitchell Santner came in, along with rookie pacers Blair Tickner and Ben Sears, who have seven Test caps between them.
