The Indian women’s hockey team seems to have put their past struggles behind them as they continued their impressive run at the Nations Cup, beating Chile 6-0 in the semifinals in Auckland on Saturday to set up a showdown against hosts New Zealand on Sunday.Navneet Kaur (6′, 13′) and Deepika (14′, 18′) scored two goals each, while Neha (36′) and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (39′) scored once each. Meanwhile, New Zealand beat the USA 4-1 in a shootout after their semifinal ended 1-1 in regulation time. The final engagements will be more interesting as India and New Zealand have won all their four matches so far, with the hosts also enjoying home advantage.India, however, will be full of confidence after a big semifinal display in which they looked like a well-oiled machine. The team coached by Sjoerd Marijne moved the ball well, connected well on the pitch and, above all, converted their chances – something they struggled to do consistently despite winning all their group games. They were particularly clinical from penalty corners, converting four of the seven they received.Salima Tete was also at the center of India’s innings and was named Player of the Match for her runs down the left.“We decided as a team before the game to play together, and that’s what we did. We played good hockey and continued our simple game. I’m happy with the team’s performance and mine,” the Indian captain said after the match.“We want another win, and we hope we can score more goals.”Earlier, India pulled away immediately and took the lead in the sixth minute when Navneet converted their first PC of the match. Seven minutes later, he added to the lead when Salima came down the left wing and found him in front of the goal to finish off.Deepika then converted two PCs in a row to make it 4-0 and take her six goals in four games.Chile tried to find a way back into the contest after the break, but India put the result beyond doubt in the third quarter. Neha headed in Deepika’s penalty corner to make it five before Rutuja made a fine clearance to add a sixth.India also won two penalty corners in the last quarter but by then Chile were well out of the competition as India booked their place in the final.
