New Delhi: Pakistan’s struggling hockey team has faced yet another setback in the final round of the FIH Pro League in England, with regular captain Ammad Shakeel Butt missing the tour due to visa issues.According to Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) official, Ammad’s visa application has been rejected, while head coach Manzur-ul-Hasan is still waiting for permission. Pakistan is scheduled to travel to England where they will play four matches against England and India from 23 June. The development comes at a difficult time for Pakistan, who have lost all 11 matches in this season’s Pro League against Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. The team is now in danger of being eliminated from the competition.PHF officials said Ammad’s visa was denied because he had been in England while playing club hockey. This has been said to be due to disagreements with the group he represented during his six months in the country. There have also been reports that Ammad has applied for political asylum in the United Kingdom. However, the PHF official said he could not personally verify the claims. In Ammad’s absence, senior player Abu Bakr is expected to be in charge of the team for the England game. There is also uncertainty in the implementation of training. If Manzur-ul-Hasan does not get his visa in time, former Pakistan all-rounder Tahir Zaman may manage the team for the England match.Pakistan’s poor performance in the Pro League has already drawn criticism from the players and fans. Questions were also raised about the decision to appoint 74-year-old Manzur as a coach and rely entirely on domestic staff, especially with the Hockey World Cup to be held in August. The visa issues have now added another challenge to the team which is desperate to make changes ahead of the World Cup.
