The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already scored eight goals just 10 days into the tournament, the second most in the competition’s history.Only the 2018 World Cup in Russia has seen more, with 12 goals scored per game. With the 2026 edition featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, this number could rise again in the coming weeks.The latest goal came on Sunday when Saudi Arabia defender Hassan Al Tambakti turned the ball into his own net as his side lost 4-0 to Spain.The United States have benefited from their goals in all of their games so far. Damián Bobadilla of Paraguay scored an own goal as the United States won 4-1, while Australia’s Cameron Burgess netted in a 2-0 loss to the hosts. As a result, the United States became the first team in men’s World Cup history to score goals in consecutive games.Bobadilla’s goal came just seven minutes after Paraguay lost to the United States. Swiss defender Miro Muheim then scored an own goal to give Qatar the equaliser. Later, Qatar came close to finding a goal when Mohamed Manai turned the ball into his own net in a 6-0 rout of Canada.Egypt’s Mohamed Hany, Iraq’s Aymen Hussein and Jordan’s Yazan Al-Arab will also score their own goals in the tournament. Hussein also scored for Iraq in the same match against Norway and became one of three players in World Cup history to score for both teams in a single match.Saudi Arabia’s Hassan Al Tambakti joined the list with his goal against Spain on Sunday.There have now been 62 goals in World Cup history, almost 12 percent of which came in the 2026 tournament alone.His first World Cup goal was scored by Mexico’s Manuel Rosas in a 3-0 defeat by Chile in the opening tournament in 1930. Rosas was 18 years old at the time.Five World Cups have ended without a single goal, the most recent being in 1990.The two goals conceded in favor of the United States this year are already tied for the most goals scored by a single team in a single World Cup. France also benefited from two goals in both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.The record for most goals scored by one team in World Cups one and two, held by Bulgaria in 1966 and Russia at the 2018 World Cup at home.
