As the growing FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage enters its final stages, attention turns to one of the most exciting battles in the competition – the competition between the third-placed teams to take part in the Round of 32.For the first time in the history of the World Cup, 48 teams have been divided into 12 groups of four. Although the top two teams from each group only advance to the knockout stage, they are not alone. The eight third-best teams in all 12 divisions also advance, completing the 32 knockout rounds.This means that 24 teams have won directly by finishing in their top two groups, while another eight have secured their place in third place. The knock-out race is heating up
In Wednesday’s games, 13 teams had already sealed qualification for the Round of 32.Group winners confirmed so far include Mexico (Group A), Switzerland (Group B), Brazil (Group C), United States (Group D), Germany (Group E) and Argentina (Group J).France, Norway, Canada, Morocco, Colombia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and South Africa have also confirmed their place in the next round.At the other end, the Czech Republic, Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Qatar and Panama have already been eliminated before the final group stage.With 13 to seven teams eliminated, 28 teams remain in contention for the remaining 19 spots.
How are the third best teams decided?
After all group matches are completed, FIFA will compare the records of the 12 teams that finished third in their groups.The ranking criteria are used as follows:
- 1. The number of points scored in all team games.
- 2. Large difference in scores in all groups.
- 3. Most successful goals in all sports categories.
- 4. The highest level of team behavior is determined by the yellow and red cards that players and team officials receive.
- 5. The highest ranking in the recent FIFA World Rankings.
The top eight teams in the series will advance to the Round of 32, while the other four third-placed teams will be sent home.
Important games are still ahead
A few definitive changes remain before the knock-out image is clear. Australia and Paraguay will meet in a thrilling clash, with the winners of Japan vs Sweden and Austria vs Algeria progressing to the next round. Cape Verde can make history by scoring against Saudi Arabia, while Colombia and Portugal will battle it out to top Group K.By Sunday morning (in India), the details of all 32 losing teams will be known.
