As the growing FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage enters its final stages, attention turns to one of the most exciting battles in the competition – the competition between the third-placed teams to take part in the Round of 32.For the first time in the history of the World Cup, 48 teams have been divided into 12 groups of four. Although the top two teams from each group only advance to the knockout stage, they are not alone. How are the third best teams decided?
After all group matches are completed, FIFA will compare the records of the 12 teams that finished third in their groups.The ranking criteria are used as follows:
- 1. The number of points scored in all team games.
- 2. Large difference in scores in all groups.
- 3. Most successful goals in all sports categories.
- 4. The highest level of team behavior is determined by the yellow and red cards that players and team officials receive.
- 5. The highest ranking in the recent FIFA World Rankings.
The top eight teams in the series will advance to the Round of 32, while the other four third-placed teams will be sent home.
Important games are still ahead
A few definitive changes remain before the knock-out image is clear. Australia and Paraguay will meet in a thrilling clash, with the winners of Japan vs Sweden and Austria vs Algeria progressing to the next round. Cape Verde can make history by scoring against Saudi Arabia, while Colombia and Portugal will battle it out to top Group K.By Sunday morning (in India), the details of all 32 losing teams will be known.
