The rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket in the last few months. Now, the 15-year-old is on the cusp of another milestone – becoming India’s last cricketer in the world.India are expected to field Sooryavanshi in the first T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday. If he plays, he will be 15 years and 91 days old, which makes him even younger Sachin Tendulkar and when he made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 at the age of 16 years and 205 days. Sooryavanshi’s expected debut comes after an amazing IPL season Rajasthan Royals. He finished as the tournament’s top scorer, scoring 776 runs in 16 innings at a rate of 237.30.Just days before joining the Indian senior team, Sooryavanshi was in India A’s match against Sri Lanka A, where he broke the record for the fastest innings in List A Cricket, reaching the milestone in just 11 balls.As the excitement surrounding the youngster continues to grow, former India coach and Rajasthan Royals head coach Rahul Dravid shared his thoughts on the youngster.Speaking to the BBC, Dravid described Sooryavanshi as a “very special talent”.“I think it’s a wonderful combination of ability to carry the speed of a bowler and then cricket smarts, without fear. It’s a complete combination,” Dravid said.Dravid added: “I don’t think there is a formula for Sooryavanshi, I don’t think you can take any kid and say, do this, and he will be good.Dravid, however, said that the success of Sooryavanshi is not limited to talent. He recalled working with him for Rajasthan Royals in 2025, when the youngster made his IPL debut at the age of 14.“But he has also worked very hard, so it’s not just a gift. From a young age, he hit a lot of balls. I saw it in Rajasthan,”Dravid also emphasized the importance of taking care of a youngster’s development as he embarks on his international career.“I just hope that he has supported me and helped me on this journey so that he can achieve his potential.”He added, “You have to protect someone like him, but it’s always better because sometimes you have to let someone fly.”
