New Delhi: The Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar paid tribute to Ben Stokes after the England captain announced his retirement from international cricket, praising his fearless approach, match-winning temper and inspirational leadership in a friendly chat.Stokes confirmed that the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge will be the final international appearance of his 15-year career, bringing the curtain down on one of the most famous careers in modern cricket. In making the announcement, Tendulkar praised Stokes for the strength and energy he brought to every match while acknowledging the passion he had as an all-rounder and a batsman.“@benstokes38, I have always admired the way you brought energy to the game. Your composure, your fearless focus, and your resilience in stressful situations was always evident when you stepped in,” Tendulkar wrote on X.The Indian legend went on to describe Stokes as one of England’s best all-rounders.“As a player, you have been one of England’s best, and as captain, your tenacity and natural reading of the game have given you another edge.”Tendulkar concluded with a heartfelt farewell while adding a touch of humor.“I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Even knowing you, being away from the center can be the hardest part. Best of luck in your next endeavors!”
Stokes leaves without regret
Stokes’ farewell, however, ended in disappointment as New Zealand’s Tom Latham completed a match-winning 160 at Trent Bridge to seal the three-match series 2-1. It was the first home Test series defeat of Stokes’ career as a player and captain.Despite the results, the 35-year-old insisted he is at peace with his decision.“I’m done, mate, and I’m very happy,” Stokes told the BBC after the match. The England star admitted that the decision took months and discussions with those close to him.“I’m very satisfied with everything right now. It’s a decision you don’t take lightly. It’s taken a long time.”Stokes also admitted that a turbulent few weeks, including the penalty row after England’s victory at Lord’s, “probably” affected his retirement, but stressed that years of physical and mental damage had taken their toll.“In the last 6-12 months I think everything I’ve been doing for a long time has gone to waste,” he said.Having captained England during the revolutionary era of “Bazball” and played in the most popular matches in the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup, Stokes will leave the world stage as one of England’s most famous players.
