The high-octane 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 at the MetLife Stadium saw France produce a masterful display to demolish Sweden 3-0. Although the scoreline showed France’s complete dominance, the story of the game was made by Les Bleus’ razor-sharp transitions against a strong and resilient team but in the end they overwhelmed the Swedish defence. Led by a clinical goal from Kylian Mbappé and a good strike from Bradley Barcola, Didier Deschamps’ men proved exactly why they are the favourites, advancing to the Round of 16 to face Paraguay.

The Tactical Landscape and the Early French Invasion

From the opening whistle, France set the pace, commanding play with 61% approval. Working in a fluid 4-2-3-1 system, the French duo of Adrien Rabiot and Aurélien Tchouaméni worked as a flawless double pivot. He passed the ball over 91% of the time, keeping out Sweden’s Lucas Bergvall and Yasin Ayari.

The French players, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola, put the Swedish wings in their own area, making Sweden’s 3-4-3 formation a very low 5-4-1. In the first twenty minutes, France launched many attacks, registering a total of 25 shots within 90 minutes. Michael Olise worked well in the pocket, pulling Victor Lindelöf out of his position and creating opportunities for Mbappé to use. Despite the constant pressure, Sweden tried to resist the French attack. Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström stood out like a titan in the opening period, saving several of his 9 games against Dembélé’s efforts and a powerful header from William Saliba.

Biggest Scorer: Mbappé Breaks Sweden’s Wall (45′)

As the half drew to a close, Sweden appeared to be on the verge of fleeing to the dressing room and struggling. However, a sharp attack by France was able to disrupt the game in the 45th minute. The build-up started deep inside the French half, when Jules Koundé intercepted a long ball towards Alexander Isak. Koundé quickly fed Tchouaméni, who saw Dembélé burst down the right.

Dembélé provided the signal, a devastating conversion from around the edge of the penalty box. Michael Olise controlled the ball with his first touch, drew two Swedish defenders to him, and unleashed a heavy, hidden pass on the left. Kylian Mbappé, running to perfection to beat the offside trap, caught the keeper and directed a fierce shot past Zetterström down the right. It was an emotional punch before he started singing.

Barcola Double Cushion (53′)

Sweden came out in the second half with renewed aggression, pushing Anthony Elanga and Viktor Gyökeres to increase the distance to force the conversion. For ten minutes, Sweden made several calls, using Gyökeres’ aerial power. However, French defenders Saliba and Dayot Upamecano remained elusive, limiting Sweden to just eight and three shots on target all night. After receiving a short Swedish timeout, France turned the game on its head with a quick attack in the 53rd minute.

After the Swedish corner was cleared by Rabiot, the ball fell to Lucas Digne on the left. Digne linked up seamlessly with Mbappé, who advanced very quickly. Mbappé pulled the Swedish defender towards him before passing the ball to Bradley Barcola. Cutting in from the left wing, Barcola leaves Gustaf Lagerbielke trailing behind, curling a powerful effort into the top right corner. The speed of this change exemplifies the dangerous sharpness of the French front line.

Mbappé Puts Game to Bed (74′)

Down 2-0, Sweden refused to give up. Head Coach Jon Dahl Tomasson encouraged his team up front, leaving the defense to settle for offensive numbers. This clever switch led to their best chance of the game in the 68th minute, when Dejan Kulusevski found Isak inside the box, but Mike Maignan made a brilliant save to keep his clean sheet. The statistical difference between the two sides became apparent as the game wore on; while Sweden fought bravely, their 81% accuracy hindered their ability to keep up the pressure in the final third. France capitalized mercilessly in the space they lost, earning 9 corners to Sweden’s 1.The final strike came in the 74th minute. Aurélien Tchouaméni picked up a curling ball in the middle of the pitch and immediately crossed into the air. He made a precise pass to Adrien Rabiot, who raced into the box before feeding Kylian Mbappé. Grabbing help on the edge of the D, Mbappé took one touch to steady himself and unleashed a brilliant, physics-defying curler that flew past Zetterström.
