Ronald Koeman has stepped down as Netherlands head coach following the Oranje’s shock performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup away to Morocco, ending his second spell in charge of the Netherlands after being eliminated from the tournament. The 63-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday, a day after the Netherlands lost 3-2 on penalties to Morocco following a 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 competition. It was the first time the Dutch failed to reach the Round of 16 in World Cup history.
Koeman announces retirement
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Koeman admitted the disappointment of the World Cup weighed heavily on him as he confirmed his retirement.“I made the final decision as coach of the Dutch national team. We all dream about the World Cup where we can make history. We didn’t win. But someone is more upset about that than I am. As a national teacher, you have this responsibility. I have always felt it, and I always will,” Koeman wrote. The former Barcelona manager reflected on how recent years have changed his priorities beyond football.“Besides, the last few years have also made me realize that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is more valuable.”Koeman added that leaving was not an easy decision after working with the club for several years.“Of course because I have worked hard and deeply with the coaching staff and the team for a long time, this was not an easy decision to make. I am grateful and I want to show my sincere appreciation for the dedication shown by all those with the Oranje throughout my time as head coach.”He also said that he wants to spend more time with his family.“I have decided that this is the right time to spend more time with my wife, my children, and my grandchildren. Right now, it feels like the right and natural decision.”
Old World Cup disappointments
Koeman’s resignation followed one of the sport’s most surprising developments. The Netherlands, who scored a tournament-leading 10 goals in the group stage, were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco before succumbing in a dangerous encounter. It was the third consecutive World Cup in which the Dutch were eliminated on penalties and ended their best record of reaching the Round of 16 in their previous 11 World Cup appearances.During his two tenures in charge, Koeman led the Netherlands to Euro 2021, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, as well as leading the Oranje to the UEFA Nations League final in 2019. He has overseen 64 qualifying countries and led the team to the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
The KNVB supports Koeman’s decision
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that Koeman had told the association that he would not be extending his current contract.Technical director Nigel de Jong paid tribute to the outgoing coach, saying: “Ronald has dedicated himself with all his faith over the past few years and has contributed a lot to the Dutch national team. On behalf of the KNVB, I want to thank him very much for this.”The organization also condemned the racist and racist abuse that was done to several Dutch players after the defeat, stressing that “racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in football, not on the internet and not in our society.”
