The Oranje will return from Japan with the words of victory in the FIFA World Cup 2026 to take control of Group FThe Netherlands produced one of their best performances in the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, beating Sweden 5-1 at the Houston Stadium to earn their first win of the tournament and book their place in the Round of 32.After a 2-2 draw with Japan in their first Group F match, Ronald Koeman’s side responded strongly with a ruthless display in attack. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored twice and substitute Crysencio Summerville added a fifth late on as the Dutch went top of the table with four points and a difference. For Sweden, who arrived in Houston full of confidence after beating Tunisia 5-1 in their opener, it was a quiet night. Graham Potter’s side created the advantage throughout the tournament and finished with more shots than the Netherlands, but a combination of damage and a good performance from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen proved costly in the end.
Brobbey and Gakpo put the Dutch in full control
The Netherlands could not have asked for a better starting point. Just five minutes into the match, Cody Gakpo burst down the left flank and revealed space behind the Swedish defense before drilling a low ball into the face of goal. Brian Brobbey hoped to deliver well, arriving at the far post to convert from close range and give the Oranje an early advantage.

Sweden tried to respond through Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, but the Dutch remained dangerous at every turn. Their second goal came in the 17th minute and came through Brobbey. Denzel Dumfries surged forward from the right and fired a dangerous pass into the penalty area. A slight deflection rattled the Swedish defense and Brobbey reacted quickly, slotting the loose ball past Kristoffer Nordfeldt to complete his heroics.

Despite going two goals down, Sweden had more time and possession for the remainder of the quarter. Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Emil Forsberg all found good positions, but Verbruggen denied them time and time again with important saves that kept the Dutch advantage going as time went on.

Any hope of a return to Sweden was extinguished as soon as he restarted.Just two minutes into the second half, Dumfries converted another assist. Finding space on the right, the full-back delivered a delightful cross that picked out Gakpo, who headed a volley into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Seven minutes later, Gakpo scored the goal of the game. Receiving a pass down the left wing, he cut deep inside, got past two Swedish defenders and unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the area that flashed into the corner by Nordfeldt.

Sweden is struggling but Verbruggen is standing firm
To their credit, Sweden refused to surrender. In the 59th minute he got the breakthrough after winning a midfield play and starting a quick transition. Isak took the lead before curling a superbly weighted ball into the path of Anthony Elanga, who slotted gently past Verbruggen to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

The goal started Sweden’s best season in the game. Potter’s team pushed forward aggressively, causing numbers to attack and forcing the Netherlands deep into their own half. Isak became the focal point of almost every Swedish move, with Kulusevski repeatedly cutting inside from a wide range of positions looking to open up chances.Sweden eventually finished the tournament with 20 shots compared to the Netherlands’ 12 and registered nine attempts on target. However, Verbruggen produced one of the standout performances of the game so far, making seven saves, including a near stop from Gyökeres and several interventions to deny Isak.

As the pressure increased, Koeman responded by introducing additional defensive reinforcements and switching the Dutch to a mixed style. Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij did well with Sweden’s well-left crosses and long-range efforts, frustrating the Scandinavians as the clock ticked down.
Summerville completes the title win as the Group F picture changes
Any lingering Swedish hopes faded in the end. In the 89th minute, substitute Crysencio Summerville took possession outside the penalty area, moved onto his powerful foot and fired a powerful shot into the top corner to end an unforgettable night for the Oranje.

The final scores confirmed the novelty of the race. Sweden enjoyed 48 percent shooting, outshot the Netherlands 20-12 and forced Verbruggen to make seven saves, while Nordfeldt had to make just one. However the Dutch converted five of their seven attempts, showing a clinical finish that Sweden couldn’t.The results have changed significantly in Group F. The Netherlands go top on four points with a positive difference of +4 after scoring seven goals in their opening two games. Sweden finished second on three points despite seeing their huge lead against Tunisia disappear. For Koeman and the Netherlands, qualification for the Round of 32 is now secured and interest can begin to finish at the top of the group. Sweden’s future is still in their own hands, but Potter’s side will need to respond against Japan on the final day of the tournament after suffering their first defeat of the competition.
