Speaking about his return to the country, Neuer admitted that his decision to leave in 2024 was well thought out.“I went back in 2024 with a good reason after a good Euro at home. For me, it was the right decision. It felt good,” said Neuer, quoted by Reuters.She also revealed that the continuation of another cycle would burden her physically and mentally.“It would have been a heavy game for me (still playing for the national team) for the last two years,” he added.In confirming his retirement, Neuer was clear about the path ahead.“For me, it is clear that this is my last tournament. I do not plan to be there in two years for the next Euro. In the last days, I have come to terms with the fact that this is the last game for Germany. But I want to wait for all the games and not for any farewell shirt.”
Back under Nagelsmann and part of the World Cup
Neuer’s inclusion in the World Cup squad surprised many, with coach Julian Nagelsmann initially naming Oliver Baumann as Germany’s first choice player.
