Brazil secured top spot in Group C with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Scotland at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, completing an unbeaten group campaign and advancing to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 as group winners. Vinícius Júnior played with the goals in 7 minutes and 45 + 3, before Matheus Cunha added a third in the 60th minute, while Neymar made a long-term return to the World Cup with a late substitution for the first time since Brazil’s quarter-final loss to Croatia in Qatar 2022.For Scotland, the defeat ended an encouraging but difficult campaign for the group. Steve Clarke’s side finished third with three points after defeating Haiti before defeats to Morocco and Brazil, leaving their hopes of progressing on the back of the final form of the third-best teams in the tournament.
Vinícius punishes Scotland as Brazil take over
Both teams entered the Group C final with big goals. Brazil still needed a draw to guarantee first place, while Scotland knew that avoiding defeat would have been a historic World Cup knock-out.Brazil established control within seven minutes after Scotland were caught trying to build patiently from the back. Scott McKenna’s errant pass under pressure fell spectacularly to Vinícius Júnior, who reacted immediately, raced into the penalty area and calmly slotted past Angus Gunn into the bottom right corner to give Brazil a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. The Real Madrid striker thought he had added to Brazil’s advantage in the 22nd minute after another move, only for a late VAR review to deny the goal due to Marquinhos’ foul on Jack Hendry in the build-up.Scotland responded well despite falling behind. In the 34th minute, Scott McTominay latched on to Casemiro’s pass before unleashing a fierce 25-yard effort that fell dangerously wide of the goal, forcing Alisson Becker to make a stunning save.Brazil eventually scored a second goal midway through the first half. In the 45+3 minute, Bruno Guimarães got things back on track after a corner was cut short before delivering an accurate cross to the far post. Vinícius left his post, rose high and directed a low header past Gunn to give Brazil a 2-0 lead at the interval.
Cunha completes the victory before Neymar returns to the World Cup stage
Brazil resumed with the same attacking intent after the break and ended the contest on the hour mark.In the 60th minute, Guimarães provided the final pass, directing the ball past the Scottish defence. Matheus Cunha timed his run to get to his side before taking the first touch and firing powerfully into the roof of the net for Brazil’s third goal.Despite the result, Scotland continued to create dangerous moments. Billy Gilmour produced a superb ball that released John McGinn, whose first-time effort beat Alisson but hit the inside of the post before Éder Militão completed the clearance. Substitute Tommy Conway took the lead again at the end of the race for Andy Robertson. The biggest blow of the evening came in the 76th minute when Neymar replaced Matheus Cunha. It was the Brazil captain’s first World Cup appearance since the quarter-final against Croatia on December 9, 2022, and his first international appearance since suffering a serious knee injury in Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay on October 17, 2023.The 34-year-old immediately stepped into his familiar Brazilian style. He had an effort on goal after a free-kick was blocked in his path, and hit a first-time shot wide, although Angus Gunn gathered well.
Vinícius joins a well-known Brazilian company
The tournament produced another fine evening for Vinícius, who finished the group stage with four goals after scoring once against Morocco, once against Haiti and twice against Scotland. In doing so, he became the first Brazilian player in 24 years to score in three World Cup group matches, joining an exclusive group of Brazilian greats that includes Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002, Romário in 1994, and Jairzinho during Brazil’s triumphant 1970 campaign. His four goals have also made him one of the top scorers in the competition, sitting behind Lionel Messi with five goals and level with Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, making him a strong contender for the Golden Boot.
Brazil will finish on top while Scotland will face a worry
Brazil finished Group C unbeaten with seven points, following a 1-1 draw with Morocco, a 3-0 win over Haiti, and a 3-0 win against Scotland. The final teams of Group C finished:
- Brazil – 7 Points (Eligible for Group C winners)
- Morocco – 5 points (Qualified)
- Scotland – 3 points
- Haiti -1 point
Brazil will now enter the Round of 32 as Group C winners, and will advance to the knockout stages after scoring just one goal in the entire group. In Scotland, the race is not over mathematically. Their third-place finish with three points makes them a contender for one of the eight best third-placed places, although their goal difference leaves them reliant on a result somewhere in the remaining stages to determine whether their 2026 World Cup campaign goes ahead.
