Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor’s broken engagement continues to be one of Bollywood’s most talked about relationships. Although neither the Bachchans nor the Kapoor family have officially confirmed the exact reason for the split, senior journalist Jyothi Venkatesh has now shared what she says was one of the main reasons behind the wedding cancellation.Speaking to Hindi Rush, Venkatesh revisited the much talked about partnership and the speculation surrounding its sudden end.
“One of the main reasons is a prenuptial agreement”
Recalling the events, Jyothi Venkatesh said that even though Abhishek and Karisma got married, their wedding kept getting postponed before being called off.“Karishma ke aur Abhishek ki engagement bhi ho gayi thi. To engagement ke baad shaadi ka din postpone the hote gaya. In the end they didn’t get married.”When asked why the wedding did not take place, he replied, “Kai rason log dete hain. One of the main reasons is … Babita against marriage.”He further admitted, “Humne bhi suna hua tha. Prenuptial agreement sign karne ke liye majboor kiya tha mujhe.”Explaining the concept, he added, “Foreign mein woh agreement sign karte the before wedding… jiski wajah se the entire property will go to the bride. To isiliye the marriage was cancelled.”Venkatesh also pointed out that the Bachchan and Kapoor families shared a warm relationship before the engagement.“Bachchan family aur Kapoor family to relation bahut strong rahe hain. Usi wajah se woh rishton ko aur strong banana chahte the towards marriage.”
The partnership lasted only a few months
Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor officially announced their engagement in October 2002 during Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday. However, the engagement lasted only a few months before being called off in January 2003.Over the years, many media reports have speculated about the reasons behind the split. A widely reported theory suggests that Karisma’s mother, Babita, allegedly wanted a prenuptial agreement and financial safeguards for her daughter, reportedly due to concerns over the Bachchan family’s business situation at the time. However, neither the Bachchan family nor the Kapoor family have officially confirmed these claims or revealed the exact reason for the split.Both eventually moved on with their lives. Abhishek Bachchan married Aishwarya Rai on April 20, 2007, and the couple welcomed their daughter Aaradhya. Karisma Kapoor married industrialist Sunjay Kapur in September 2003. They had two children—Samaira and Kiaan—before their marriage ended in divorce in 2016. Karisma previously described that period of her life as extremely traumatic.
