Although neither Mithun nor Sridevi have been publicly confirmed as married, senior entertainment journalist Jyothi Venkatesh has now hit back at the claims, saying the two were briefly living as husband and wife.Speaking to Hindi Rush, Venkatesh admitted that the actors shared a domestic life for a short time.“If you’re asking if they’re in an intimate relationship, they’ve actually been together as a couple for about three months,” he said.
“Everyone knows they belong together”
Recalling an outdoor shoot, Venkatesh said he witnessed the episode himself.“There was a shoot outside of Mithun that I went to. Sridevi never came to the sets. She would stay in the room, but everyone knew they were together,” he recalls.The veteran journalist also shared a light hearted exchange with his partner Mithun at the time.“Mithun is a good friend of mine. I even joked with him. I said, ‘Mithun sir, now you must have learned Tamil.’ He immediately understood what I meant and said, ‘Please don’t talk to me in Tamil. Just ask me how I’m doing.’ The reference, of course, is to Sridevi.
Why did the relationship not last long?
When asked why the relationship ended, Venkatesh pointed to compatibility issues and the circumstances surrounding the two stars at the time.“There were compatibility issues. Also, at that point, Sridevi was Sridevi. Mithun was a successful actor, but Sridevi became a phenomenon.”He added, “Mithun has been through various relationships in the past, so at the time people felt that he could never be trusted in a relationship.”However, Venkatesh realizes that Mithun’s marriage to Yogeeta Bali has finally stood the test of time.“Even when he married Yogeeta Bali after divorcing his first wife, Helena Luke, many people did not believe that the marriage would last. But now they are married for many years. They have three sons and an adopted daughter.
The long-standing rumours
Although Mithun and Sridevi have not confirmed their marriage, rumors about their relationship first surfaced in the late 1980s. According to long-circulated reports, the two met on the sets of Jaag Utha Insaan in the early 1980s, where their on-screen chemistry reportedly blossomed into a real-life romance.Several reports over the years claimed that the actors secretly got married in 1985 and stayed together until 1988. By then, however, Mithun was already married to Yogeeta Bali, whom he married after divorcing his first wife, Helena Luke. The alleged relationship is also said to have created a major crisis in Mithun and Yogeeta’s marriage.There are further reports that Sridevi ended the relationship after realizing that Mithun would not leave his wife. She later married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996, and the couple welcomed daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, both of whom are now actors.Neither Mithun Chakraborty nor Sridevi have ever publicly confirmed these reports, and the alleged marriage has remained the subject of speculation for decades.
