Spain reached a strong point after collecting four points from their opening two games. The reigning European champions began their campaign with a draw against Cape Verde before responding with an emphatic victory over Saudi Arabia to go top of the standings. Luis de la Fuente’s side now only need a draw to secure first place in Group H and qualify for the Round of 32 as group winners.
Uruguay’s path has been very difficult. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have taken on all the starters, first against Saudi Arabia and then in a thrilling match against Cape Verde, which left them with two points going into the final day. A win for Spain would secure qualification and could send La Celeste back to first place, while a draw or defeat would leave them dependent on the result of the Group H match between Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia to determine whether their World Cup campaign will continue.
This trend shows how well the team is doing. Spain is leading with four points and a +4 goal difference. Uruguay is in second place on two points for the difference in political intent, closely followed by Cape Verde on two points and Saudi Arabia on one point. With each team still in with a mathematical chance of progressing, all eyes will be on all Group H matches throughout the night.
The tournament also brings together two countries with rich World Cup traditions. Uruguay is one of the most famous teams in international football, having lifted the World Cup in 1930 and in 1950, while Spain reached its peak by winning the tournament in 2010 before relegating the European champions to UEFA Euro 2024.
Despite Uruguay’s illustrious history, they have not defeated Spain in their previous ten meetings spanning 76 years. Spain have won five of their matches, while the other five have ended the season. Their World Cup campaign has been amazing, however. The countries drew 2-2 in the final of the 1950 World Cup and another goalless draw followed in Italy ’90.
Choosing a group also adds a new dimension. Uruguay is without defender Ronald Araújo, who continues to be unwell and hopes to return if the team reaches the final. Spain, meanwhile, will also put their faith in youngster Lamine Yamal, whose skills on the right wing have been one of their main attacking weapons alongside established stars including Rodri and Nico Williams.
On the road, two of the most respected coaches in football go head-to-head. De la Fuente has modernized Spain by combining handball and direct attack after the country’s success at Euro 2024, while Bielsa continues to impose the unyielding, aggressive and attacking vertical football that has defined his coaching career and influenced generations of elite managers.
