Ireland ended their long wait for a win at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, beating West Indies by six wickets in Bristol on Saturday to register their first win in the tournament after a 21-match losing streak spanning 12 years.The result not only marked a historic moment for Ireland but also had a major impact on the finals. A win would have guaranteed West Indies a place in the last four. In fact, the defeat gave the New Zealanders a lifeline. The White Ferns can now qualify for the semi-finals if they beat England later on Saturday, while an England win would still see them through to the West Indies.Ireland’s win added to a memorable week for the country after the men’s team defeated India in the first T20I in Belfast.After restricting West Indies to 128/7, Ireland chased down the target with 11 balls to spare. Orla Prendergast produced another match-winning performance, capping the innings with a superb 63 from 44 deliveries. His knock gave Ireland a huge lead before they departed with just 21 runs still needed.Rebecca Stokell and Louise Little kept themselves in the closing stages, with the latter sealing a decisive victory by driving to a winning margin at midnight as Ireland finished on 129/4.Earlier, the West Indies struggled to perform well when sent in to bat, managing just 128/7 despite several batsmen making starts. Ireland’s good bowling and sharp fielding kept the Caribbean team at bay, leaving them in a defensive position.
