Indian athletes witnessed a historic day at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar where a long-standing national record was broken. Kerala’s Ancy Sojan achieved a feat in the women’s long jump, breaking a record that stood for more than two decades and was held by one of India’s greatest athletes, Anju Bobby George.Ancy, 25, jumped 6.88 meters to set a new world record, surpassing Anju Bobby George’s mark of 6.83 meters, which was achieved in the 2004 Athens Olympics. His victory is a milestone in Indian athletics and marks the arrival of a new benchmark in the event.Ancy’s record-breaking effort was the highlight of the day at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, where the National Inter-State Championships are being held from June 24 to 28. The Kerala athlete’s jump ended 22-year-old Anju Bobby George’s reign as the national record holder in women’s long jump.This performance further cements Ancy’s reputation as one of India’s leading athletes ahead of the upcoming world championships.The race also saw another national record fall in the men’s sprint event. Sarvesh Kushara he cleared 2.31 meters to set a new national record, surpassing Tejaswin Shankar’s previous record of 2.29 meters.Several athletes have also qualified for the upcoming Asian Games through their performances in Bhubaneswar. Among them are Dev Meena, women’s 100m sprinter Jyothi Yarraji, hammer thrower Anushka Yadav and middle distance runner Mohammed Afsal.
