Ireland recorded one of the biggest victories in their cricket history on Sunday, taking former T20 World Cup holders India by one run in the second T20I to complete a thrilling 2-0 sweep at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Stormont. The win marked Ireland’s first win over India and ended the visitors’ remarkable run of 16 consecutive T20Is, a streak that ran until 2023. India’s chase of 155 was held together by Tilak Varma, whose fifty kept the innings going till the end. However, Jai Moondra’s opener, followed by Ireland’s stunner, proved to be solid as the players defended well throughout the attack.Ireland’s bowling also stood out throughout the series, with Moondra and Matthew Hollard picking up three wickets each in the second match. For India, the defeat exposed some of the problems identified, particularly their struggle with left-arm pace and adapting to the conditions outside the IPL.The chase was immediate. Moondra hit twice in the opening to remove both Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma for the first football ducks. Samson, caught lbw after missing a skiddy delivery. Two balls later, Abhishek miscued a short ball and was caught at third man.India’s problems worsened when the captain Shreyas Iyer he clipped one back to his stumps from Moondra after scoring 10. Ishan Kishan tried to rebuild alongside Tilak Varma, but confusion between the wickets resulted in 12 being lost. With the scoreboard reading 39 for 4 in the Powerplay, India lost four wickets inside the first six overs for only the 13th time in T20I history.Varma responded calmly, getting consecutive boundaries from Moondra through his leg before sharing a 32-run partnership with Axar Patel to set up the innings. A brief interruption of rain interrupted the game, but the duo ensured that India remained in the competition even as the demand rate continued to rise.Ireland struck again after the restart when Matthew Hollard dismissed Axar Patel. Attempting to control the ball, Axar instead found Lorcan Tucker, who finished with a one-handed dive to the left behind the stumps.Shivam Dube poked a slow stroke with a boundary before it went past Matthew Humphreys’ deep leg. Meanwhile, Varma continued to put in an innings and reached his half-century in 45 balls by launching the first six of India’s innings, sending Hollard to midwicket. His stay, however, ended immediately. Looking to clear the infield again, Varma fumbled a drive to extra cover, where opener Suryansh Shedge soon followed after failing to clear the boundary and being caught at deep mid-wicket.It was Harshit Rana who started the fight late on to keep India’s hopes alive. He drove Moondra to four points before going over long on with a six to drag the equation to the 20 required from the last over. Rana added another margin from a free kick after the ball eluded the fielder, while Harry Tector conceded two runs to lift India’s hopes. However, Tector played an important role, keeping Rana out of harm’s way. Prince Yadav hit a six off the final delivery, but India finished on 153 for 9, a miserable one-run deficit.Earlier, Ireland had recovered from their early start to post 154 for 8 when they were asked to bat first. Harry Tector anchored the innings with 53, while Ben Calitz contributed 37. Opener Prince Yadav impressed with figures of 3 for 22, and Shivam Dube chipped in with 2 for 25.Summary Scores: Ireland 154/8 in 20 overs (Harry Tector 53, Ben Calitz 37; Prince Yadav 3-22, Shivam Dube 2-25) beat India 153/9 in 20 overs (Tilak Varma 55, Harshit Rana 21; Matthew Hollard 3-2, Moondra 3-2)
