India’s campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended with yet another team exit, but Harmanpreet Kaur‘s team had something to take away from the competition. Despite losing to Australia by six wickets in their last Group A match and missing out on the semifinals, India secured a place in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games through the ICC process.The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced the eligibility criteria for cricket to return to the Olympics after 128 years. The men’s and women’s T20 tournament in Los Angeles 2028 will each have six teams. India became the highest ranked team from Asia at the Women’s T20 World Cup. Although Harmanpreet Kaur’s team did not reach the finals, they finished ahead of any other Asian team in the tournament, earning them the country’s only Olympic berth.Six teams will compete in each men’s and women’s event.“The ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has confirmed the first LA28 participants, with Australia, Great Britain (via England), India and South Africa qualifying as the finalists from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Those places have been placed on one continent,” the ICC said in a release on Monday.Fifth place in the tournament, in both the women’s and men’s categories, can go to host USA, provided they finish in the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings at any time between June 30 and December 31, 2026. If the USA does not achieve the rankings, the spot will go to the highest ranked team that did not qualify in the ICC Women’s T20 71 March 2021 rankings.In the men’s competition, if the USA does not qualify, the fifth qualifying spot will be awarded to the next highest team from any continent that has not qualified by December 31, 2026.The sixth and final Olympic place in the men’s and women’s events will be determined through the first ICC Olympic Qualifier, which will take place in 2027.The ICC also clarified how the qualifiers will work for the West Indies. Since West Indies represents several Caribbean countries as one member of the ICC and is not recognized as an IOC National Olympic Committee (NOC), cannot compete in the Olympic Games oget a direct part of the Olympics.However, if the West Indies men’s or women’s team finishes among the eight teams that did not qualify on December 31, 2026, another Caribbean qualifier will be held to select the International Olympic Committee from that region to represent the Caribbean at the ICC Olympic Qualifier.

What do you qualify for a men’s club?

The USA is eligible for the only spot as hosts, but only if they finish in the top 15 of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings at any time between June 30 and December 31, 2026.The only remaining places will go to the most qualified teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in the ICC Men’s T20I series on December 31, 2026, with only one team qualifying directly from each continent.The sixth and final place will be decided through the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027, an eight-team tournament that will determine the final team to reach the Los Angeles Games.
