Natalie Cassidy has opened up about a deeply distressing experience involving her nine-year-old daughter’s emergency hospitalization. The ‘EastEnders’ star, best known for her role as trumpet-playing drama-magnet Sonia Fowler, revealed she rushed her daughter Joanie to A&E after the child broke her arm in an accident at school.Cassidy spoke about the harrowing details of the incident, which happened just weeks after Joanie underwent surgery on the same arm following a previous injury. She shares Joanie with her fiance Marc Humphreys. He also has an older daughter, 15-year-old Eliza, from a previous relationship.
The traumatic incident at school
Cassidy explained the circumstances surrounding the accident with emotional honesty. He described how he and his family plan to spend quality time together at home. “I did a little work in the morning at home. [Marc] went out, installed the paddling pool, cut all the grass – thought we would have a few days, like a mini holiday, at home. And then the phone rang,” he explained on his Life with Nat podcast. The call brought devastating news. “Joanie broke her arm again. Same arm – smashed to pieces. General anesthesia, same surgery,” Cassidy said, describing the injury in those terms. The incident happened when Joanie sneaked into the hall before PE at school.

Natalie Cassidy’s emotional response
The emotional weight of the situation proved to be too much for the actress. “I feel like I’m having a nervous breakdown. I’m being really honest here. I’m really down. I’m not in a good place. Her little body – and the medicine and the trauma of everything,” Cassidy candidly shared about her mental state during the crisis.
Medical investigation to repeated fractures
After the second fracture, medical professionals began to investigate whether an underlying condition might be contributing to Joanie’s susceptibility to broken bones. Cassidy revealed that her daughter was tested for “some type of disability” that could explain the frequency of injuries. However, the test results came back reassuringly normal. “He had full blood tests, and everything was in range. It was absolutely perfect. The consultant actually said, ‘I think it’s just bad luck’,” reported Cassidy, indicating that the medical team did not find a physiological explanation for the repeated fractures.

Natalie Cassidy’s social media safety advocacy
In addition to dealing with her family’s health crisis, Cassidy has been vocal about child safety concerns. In February, he expressed his support for a proposed ban on the use of social media for those under 16, supporting a campaign called Big Tech’s Little Victims. The campaign revealed alarming findings through an algorithmic experiment designed to determine what content platforms are showing young users. Four fake profiles set up with a minimum user age of 13 were served hundreds of pieces of content in just one week. “I can’t tell you how shocking it is. They’re looking at sexual content, racism, violence, misogyny, extreme dieting leading to anorexia, self-harm and even suicidal thoughts. Unbelievable,” Cassidy said, expressing her horror at the material available to children.
