Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany coach following their shock exit from the FIFA World Cup, ending his tenure less than three years after taking the job.The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, four days after Germany were eliminated by Paraguay in the round of 32 following a 1-1 draw and shootout. The result saw Germany’s third consecutive World Cup campaign end before the round of 16.His resignation came after negotiations with the union. Nagelsmann has previously said he wants to stay even with two years left on his contract, making him one of the highest-paid coaches at the World Cup.His future had been scrutinized during the tournament, and he was criticized for his tactics and team selection.Germany’s loss to Paraguay was also their first penalty shootout defeat in a FIFA World Cup. The result kept them out of the round of 16, where they would have faced France.Germany finished top of their group with wins over Curacao and Ivory Coast. However, they looked unsatisfied in their defeat to Ecuador in the final group stage.Nagelsmann also faced questions over his decision to bring veteran midfielder Manuel Neuer back into the starting line-up and to use Joshua Kimmich at right back instead of his preferred midfielder.Nagelsmann was appointed Germany coach in September 2023. Prior to this World Cup campaign, he also led the team to the finals of Euro 2024.According to reports, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is one of the frontrunners to replace him.
