Morocco picked up their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory in Scotland, but the big story of the night was Ismael Saibari, whose stunning strike after 71 seconds not only ended the tournament but earned his place in Moroccan football history. The Group C encounter at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough had a lot of meaning for both countries. Scotland arrived on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti, while Morocco were held to a 1-1 draw against Brazil in their opening match. A win would boost either side’s hopes of winning the tournament, and Morocco took advantage immediately through one of the tournament’s exiting players.Saibari’s goal was enough to separate the teams, lifting the Atlas Lions to four points from two games and significantly improving their chances of reaching the Round of 32. In doing so, the PSV Eindhoven player became the winner of the fastest goal of the World Cup 2026 and the first Moroccan player to have played in consecutive World Cup games. For a player who was making his first World Cup appearance, it was another impressive chapter in a career that has grown exponentially over the past two years.
The goal that changed the match and the record books
Morocco needed more than a minute to take control. From the opening, Brahim DÃaz saw space behind the Scottish defense and delivered a precise pass that cut in and opened up the back line. Saibari timed it well, took it and finished calmly to give Morocco a 1-0 lead after just 71 seconds.

The goal was briefly reviewed by the independent VAR before it was officially confirmed, but the decision was not in doubt. Morocco did very well and Saibari broke the game record. His strike topped the list of fastest goals in the 2026 World Cup, bettering the previous record by Czech midfielder Michal SadÃlek, who scored after five minutes and eight seconds against South Africa.
- Ismael Saibari (Morocco vs Scotland) – 71 seconds
- Michal SadÃlek (Czechia vs South Africa) – 5 minutes, 8 seconds
- Felix Nmecha (Germany vs Curacao) – 5 minutes, 16 seconds
- Damián Bobadilla’s goal (Paraguay vs United States) – 6 minutes, 12 seconds
The strike also became the fastest World Cup goal ever scored by a Moroccan player, adding another record to an ever-growing list.
The first Moroccan to score in consecutive World Cup matches
Saibari had already introduced himself to an international audience in Morocco’s opening match against Brazil.Making his debut at the World Cup on June 14, 2026, he scored a stunning goal against Brazilian midfielder Alisson, helping Morocco earn a valuable 1-1 draw against one of their favorite teams.Five days later, he followed up that goal with another assist against Scotland.By recording his first two World Cup appearances, Saibari became the first and only Moroccan player in history to score consecutive World Cup appearances.

The distinction is important when compared to the old Moroccan writings. Youssef En-Nesyri remains the first Moroccan player to score in two different World Cups, having netted in 2018 and 2022.Saibari’s victory thus stands alone in the history of Moroccan football. His success also puts him in rare company on the continent. He is the second African player to play in his first two matches at the World Cup, joining Egypt’s Mohamed Salah.
The Moroccan player has fought for international safety
Saibari’s international story is as interesting as his club career.Born in Spain and raised in Belgium, he had to represent several countries through his upbringing. Its dual nature meant that several international strategies existed during its formative years.Morocco eventually won the tournament.Former Belgium manager Roberto MartÃnez, who later became the head coach of Portugal, was one of the celebrities who admired Saibari’s talent as his reputation continued to grow in European football. Morocco, however, successfully integrated him into their national team and secured his international future. He made his Moroccan debut on September 12, 2023, in a 1–0 win against Burkina Faso.Although he was not part of the famous Moroccan team that reached the finals of Qatar 2022, he became an important part of the next generation of Atlas Lions players.

Even before the World Cup, he has already shown his ability to attract matches in all kinds of formats. Along with his decent contributions, he also scored two goals against Madagascar in a friendly match, further cementing his growing reputation within the national team.
From Belgium Academy to Bayern Munich
The 2026 World Cup may be Saibari’s first appearance on soccer’s biggest stage, but his rise was built on years of steady work.Born in Spain before moving to Belgium at a young age, he went through a number of prestigious schools including Willebroek, Beerschot and Anderlecht before joining Genk in 2017.In Genk, he signed his first professional contract and gained valuable experience in elite youth competitions, including the UEFA Youth League. His next big step came in July 2020 when PSV Eindhoven brought him to the Netherlands.Saibari initially played for Jong PSV in the Dutch second division, where he played over 50 matches and developed the physical and intellectual presence needed in the top flight. His first team was under Roger Schmidt on November 1, 2020. The COVID-19 epidemic within the main team created an unexpected opportunity, and the then 19-year-old was substituted in the 4-0 Eredivisie win over ADO Den Haag.In the following seasons he alternated between the reserves and the senior teams before establishing himself under Ruud van Nistelrooy. That progress turned him from a reliable prospect into one of the Eredivisie’s best performers.
Eredivisie MVP, worth €40 million and moved to Bayern
Saibari’s streak reached another milestone in the 2025-26 season. He helped PSV secure a third consecutive Eredivisie title and scored 15 goals during the league campaign, performances that earned him the Eredivisie MVP and Eredivisie Player of the Year honors. His performances raised his profile throughout Europe and increased his market value.According to his latest Transfermarkt profile, Saibari currently has a market value of €40 million.Interest from elite clubs quickly followed, and Bayern Munich moved quickly to secure his signature. The German midfielder has agreed a full-time deal with PSV Eindhoven in a transfer worth between €52 million and €55 million, setting a new transfer record for the Dutch club. Saibari has already completed his medical and has signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2031.The move is expected to be announced as early as early July, although all major details of the transfer have already been agreed.
Taking the right form to the world
What makes Saibari’s World Cup performance less surprising is the consistency he has shown throughout the training sessions in Morocco.Atlas Lions dominated CAF Group E, winning eight games, scoring 22 goals and conceding just two.Saibari scored three goals in this period. He scored twice in Niger’s 5-0 win over Morocco that secured Morocco’s place in the 2026 World Cup, finding the net in the 29th and 38th minutes. He then added another goal in a 4-1 win over Gabon, beating the defenders before scoring late on in the 90th minute. The donation helped Morocco qualify for the much bigger 48-team tournament. Now he has carried the form directly on the biggest stage in football.Morocco entered the tournament hoping to build on recent success and compete for another deep World Cup run. Two games into the tournament are winless after a friendly against Brazil and a win over Scotland, with Saibari scoring in both games. For Morocco, the immediate reward is an important victory and a strong place in Group C. For Saibari, the evening represented something big. In 71 seconds, he scored the fastest goal of the tournament, became the first Moroccan player to participate in consecutive World Cups, cemented his position as one of the most exciting midfielders in Africa and continued the incredible journey that has taken him from the youth academy in Belgium to join Bayern Munich as one of the players who emerged from the FIFA6 World Cup 202.
