Australia are ready to take a chance on Ellyse Perry if needed in Sunday’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s, with head coach Shelley Nitschke saying the player can play even if she is unfit.Perry retired during Australia’s semi-final win over the West Indies at The Oval after suffering what the team said was a “minor quad sensation”. He departed after facing seven balls, with Australia saying the decision was taken as a precautionary measure as they controlled the game.Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Nitschke said Australia had not learned from the second half, so there were no clear changes for Perry. However, he admitted that the World Cup final changes how teams view the players’ fitness.“Yeah, maybe,” Nitschke said when asked if Perry could play without being fit.“I think there are other things he wants to do, [to] you can still contribute to the team and hold your own, whether it’s in the field or running between the wickets. But there is that thing, this is the final of the World Cup, so what is our tolerance then? So definitely a slightly different lens than sometimes. “Nitschke said the team was hopeful that Perry would make it to the finals.“I hope he’s fine and available on Sunday,” Nitschke said.“We don’t have a clear picture of what that looks like.“We’re positive, but not 100 percent sure how it happened at this point.”Perry led Australia in scoring in the tournament with 185 runs at an average of 46.25 and a strike rate of 135.03. He has scored half-centuries against Pakistan and India, including a 38-ball 56 against India that led Australia to victory and ended the campaign of Harmanpreet Kaur’s team.He has also taken four wickets during the tournament.Australia will play their last international tournament since 2023 when they play at Lord’s on Sunday. Perry, who missed the final of the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground due to a hip injury, is now in the running for another chance to win the World Cup.
