In support of the United States in their FIFA World Cup round-16 match against Belgium, Folarin Balogun will be available after FIFA lifted his one-match ban on Sunday.Balogun, the USA’s top scorer in the tournament with three goals, received a red card in the Americans’ 2-0 round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday after tripping Tarik Muharemović.His suspension meant he would miss Tuesday’s knockout match against Belgium, but FIFA’s disciplinary committee overturned the decision under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.According to FIFA, the ban has been suspended for a trial period of one year. If Balogun commits another similar offense during that time, the suspension will be reinstated and he will have to serve a one-game ban, along with any penalty for the new offense.“The imposition of a one-match suspension is a trial period of one year,” FIFA announced on Sunday. “If Folarin Balogun commits another violation of similar gravity during the probation period, the suspension will be lifted and the punishment will be enforced without prejudice to any other punishment that will be imposed for the new violation.”The United States Soccer Federation welcomed the decision and confirmed that Balogun will be available for the Belgium match.“We accept the decision of the disciplinary committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow,” US Soccer said in a statement. “All our attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the support of our amazing fans.”FIFA has already used Article 27 to allow Cristiano Ronaldo to play in Portugal’s World Cup opener after receiving a red card against the Republic of Ireland. The United States is looking to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time since 2002. Since then, it has been eliminated in the round of 16 by Ghana in 2010, Belgium in 2014 and the Netherlands in 2022. The Americans were also out of the group in 2006 and failed in the 2018 World Cup.
