New Delhi: Africa has done better than ever FIFA World Cupand nine of the 10 teams that reached the Round of 32 for the 2026 tournament. This is the first time that many African countries have qualified for the tournament. The previous record was just two teams, which was set at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil when Algeria and Nigeria advanced. The only African team that missed out this time was Tunisia.
Nine countries record winning positions
After 17 days of groups, Morocco, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Egypt, Algeria, DR Congo and Cabo Verde have all secured a place in the Round of 32.This incredible victory shows the rising power of African football in the world.
Algeria survived in the finals
Algeria managed a 3-3 draw against Austria.The game looked to be going Algeria’s way as captain Riyad Mahrez scored late on to make it 3-2. However, Austria equalized with almost the last kick of the game.These matches were enough for both teams to enter the final round.
DR Congo has made history
DR Congo reached the finals for the first time after coming from behind to beat Uzbekistan 3-1.Eldor Shomurodov took the lead for Uzbekistan, but DR Congo fought back in the second half.Yoane Wissa equalized with a penalty before Fiston Mayele put his team ahead. Wissa then added another goal in stoppage time to complete the comeback.The win was also DR Congo’s first World Cup victory. They will now face England in the Round of 32.
Cabo Verde continues its fairytale run
World Cup debutants Cabo Verde also made history by reaching the knockout stage without winning a single group.The Blue Sharks have drawn all three of their games, including impressive results against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.They became the first team since Chile at the 1998 World Cup to advance from the group stages without winning a match.Veteran player Vozinha once again entered the record books. At the age of 40, he became the third goalkeeper in World Cup history, after Peter Shilton and Dino Zoff, to keep more clean sheets after turning 40.
Morocco continues to impress
Morocco, who became the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar 2022, have also shown their quality.They drew 1-1 with Brazil during the group stage and advanced to the knockout stages as one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
