Shreyas Iyer is all set to usher in a new era for India’s T20I team after being given the charge in the upcoming match against Ireland. The selection marks a major turnaround for the midfielder, who missed out on India’s T20 World Cup squad but has now returned to the country with an increased responsibility following his successful leadership in the IPL in recent years. The selectors’ decision reflects a growing confidence in Iyer’s leadership, with the role also giving him an opportunity to cement his place in India’s T20I plans after being overlooked in the previous two T20 World Cups.Ahead of the first phase of Indian education under the new leadership team, the head teacher Gautam Gambhir addressed the team and thanked Iyer for overseeing the side. Gambhir described the role as a special honor and expressed confidence that the new captain will set a good example on and off the field.“I want to congratulate Shreyas for being chosen as India’s captain. It is a great honor to lead your country, and I am sure you will do a great job, not only on the field, but also,” Gambhir said in a video sent by the BCCI.Addressing the players for the first time as India’s T20I captain, Iyer explained the culture he hopes to instill within the dressing room. He emphasized the importance of cooperation, mutual support and creating an environment where every player feels valued while enjoying the game.“Let’s try to create a strong culture going forward. My first opportunity to be in charge of the Indian team and of course the honor and privilege as Gauti bhai mentioned. It is a great honor and to lead the country. So going forward, I want to create a culture where we all protect each other, support each other through the dark and thin, and most importantly, when we are out here, Iyer said fun as much as possible. The new manager also encouraged his teammates to play with confidence and to act fearlessly. Referring to the team as a family, Iyer asked everyone to support each other, celebrate their shared success and approach every match with the belief that India can win.“It’s a great opportunity and this is a family. Let’s play like Lions and approach every game if we win and play as hard as we can. Have a culture where we encourage each other and enjoy each other’s success,” he said. The Ireland series will mark the beginning of Iyer’s tenure as India’s T20I captain, with the team hoping to usher in a new chapter under his leadership.
