Mohanlal applied under Ivory Amnesty scheme in Kerala; Intended to declare wildlife articles

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has reportedly approached the Kerala Forest Department under the state government’s one-time amnesty scheme to declare ivory articles in his possession.According to a report in The Hindu, the move aims to regularize wildlife articles and ensure legal protection offered under the scheme. The amnesty program allows qualified individuals to declare previously unregistered wildlife articles. Successful applicants will receive immunity from legal action under the provisions of the scheme.

The Forest Department recorded the actor’s statement

Reports from the same website said that as part of the process, a senior Forest Department official recently visited Mohanlal’s residence in Kochi and conducted an inspection under Section 41 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.During the interrogation, the actor was reportedly asked about the origin of the ivory articles, when he got them, and why he didn’t declare them earlier. The inquiry forms part of the verification process before any decision is taken on the application submitted under the amnesty scheme.

The High Court canceled the possession certificates

The matter gained fresh attention after a Division Bench of the Kerala High Court delivered its verdict in October 2025. The Bench canceled the ownership certificates previously issued to Mohanlal. It also rejected the government’s order allowing him to retain the ivory articles.According to the High Court, the 2015 government notification has not been published in the official gazette. The certificates of ownership and the authorization given for the possession of ivory articles lost their legal validity.Even after the High Court’s decision, the Forest Department did not initiate criminal charges for the alleged illegal possession of wildlife articles.

The legal proceedings are still pending

The legal dispute involving the actor has not yet reached a conclusion. Mohanlal has already moved the Kerala High Court challenging a trial court order rejecting the state government’s plea to withdraw the prosecution against him.Apart from that petition, another plea filed by the actor seeking to dismiss the criminal proceedings is also pending in the High Court.
