Just after lunch, Shoaib Bashir hit Devon Conway on the pad when the batting was on 71 and New Zealand were 157 without loss. England chose not to review the lbw decision, simply replaying the video to show the ball would have hit the stumps. Later in the innings, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith gave up a straight chance when Tom Latham was on 129. Both batsmen went on to score centuries and add more than 300 runs together. Smith made amends with three catches on the afternoon, including the dismissal of Latham, but the missed opportunity had allowed New Zealand to build a huge platform. On a flat batting surface, such moments were precious and England were left to wonder what would have happened had the opportunity been taken.
