India suffered a shocking 2-0 T20I series loss to Ireland, marking the first time they have lost a T20I series against an Irish team. After dominating the IPL at the batting ground, India’s young batting line-up found it difficult on the pitches, struggling to adjust as Ireland beat them in both matches.Former India captain Ravichandran Ashwin believes the defeat was a reality check and not a surprise. According to him, Indian batsmen are used to “24-carat” batting techniques in the IPL, where stroke-making is easy, and they can face difficulties when faced with challenges in international cricket.“The kind of 24-carat batting that we see in the IPL is not available here, and I was very happy with the cricket that was played,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.“Most of India’s batting line-up has come from the IPL. Their true value at the international level will be measured only when they play wickets that are not true. The batting line-up has undoubtedly improved because of the IPL, but when they face pitches that provide movement and support to the bowlers, they will face problems.” – Ashwin added.Ashwin added that challenges are important for the development of young batsmen and will ultimately prepare them well for international cricket, where every position is not designed to be highly competitive.
Ireland beat India for the first time
Ireland recorded one of the biggest upsets in their cricket history by defeating the reigning T20 world champions India 2-0 in a two-match T20I in Belfast. It was Ireland’s first T20I win over India, their first win over India by any means, and their first T20I loss to India since 2023.The players had a dream by winning the opening T20I by 34 runs after posting 182/9. Despite Abhishek Sharma’s massive 500, India’s batting sagged under pressure as Ireland’s tactical attack and strategic use of resources led to victory.The second T20I led to an even bigger contest. Ireland recovered from the early toss to post 154/8, thanks to a fifty from Harry Tector and a valuable contribution from Ben Calitz. Chasing 155, India stumbled early as Jai Moondra dismissed Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma before dismissing captain Shreyas Iyer. Although Tilak Varma’s batting 55 set India in the chase, Ireland pulled off a scare at the death to claim a stunning victory and complete the historic 2-0 series. Moondra was named Player of the Series for his match-winning performance.
