Playing at home has brought high hopes for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but it has also brought opportunities. Top of Group D with six points, the Americans now have three wins to match their current World Cup record, but first they must overcome a Bosnian team that has already gone beyond expectations.
The United States had a rough start to the tournament. A thrilling 4-2 win over Paraguay showed the pace and finishing of Pochettino’s attacking football before a 2-0 win over Australia secured the chance to have the rest of the game. Having already secured first place, several regular starters were rested in the narrow 3-2 defeat to Türkiye, allowing key players to reach new heights in the knock-out competition.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path has been very surprising. After reaching the final via a playoff victory over Italy, Sergej Barbarez led his team in a tough Group B encounter. They opened with a 1-1 draw against Canada before losing 4-1 to group winners Switzerland. Faced with elimination from their last group stage, Bosnia produced a stunning response, defeating Qatar 3-1 to finish with four points and advance as one of the third-best teams in the tournament.
This will be the first competitive meeting between the two countries and the first meeting in FIFA World Cup history. The United States remained unbeaten in their previous three meetings, recording two wins and one draw, though both came in international games.
Much of the spotlight will fall on Christian Pulisic, who has scored many of the United States’ goals in the tournament. Along with him, Folarin Balogun will return after being rested against Türkiye and is expected to lead the American attack. Behind them, the defensive union will also be tasked with fighting against one of Europe’s leading powerhouses.
Bosnia continues to rely on veteran Edin Džeko, whose leadership, physical presence and athleticism remain at the center of their attacking strategy even after turning 40. There is also an impressive squad that includes Esmir Bajraktarević, born in Wisconsin who represented the United States at a young age before switching his international allegiance to Herzegonia and Herzegonia.
Logically, this competition presents a conflict of different philosophies. The United States will try to control transitions quickly, wide and aggressively, while Bosnia will be expected to remain strong in defense before looking to release Džeko and many of their players quickly in attack.
According to Opta’s advanced system, the United States enters as the favorite with a 67.5 percent chance of winning in regulation time and a 76.6 percent chance of advancing. Even so, history warns. The Americans have not beaten European opposition in the knockout stage at the World Cup since they met in the quarter-finals in 2002, meaning another big challenge lies ahead for the hosts.
Whoever wins in Santa Clara will travel to Seattle to face Belgium or Senegal in the Round of 16.
