Abara Azam has returned as Pakistan’s Test captain after being sacked by the Pakistan Cricket Board Shan Masood out of office on Sunday following poor results.Masood replaced Babar at the end of 2023 but Pakistan won just four of the 16 matches during his tenure, losing 12.Explaining the decision, chief selector Aaqib Javed said the selectors are looking for a captain who can produce good results.“We wanted to look for a captain who can lead the team in a better way,” Javed told reporters in Lahore, as quoted by the AP news agency. “Shan’s individual performance was good but as captain we didn’t get the results we wanted.”Javed said there was complete consensus within the selection committee on Babar’s selection.“The selection committee sat down and discussed in detail. They tried which player would prove to be the best captain in Test cricket. There were many discussions, but the selection committee made only one decision, and that is Babar Azam. That’s it,” said Aaqib.Pakistan’s test scores declined significantly during Masood’s tenure. His first career ended in a 3-0 defeat to Australia. Pakistan then lost 2-0 to Bangladesh for the first time. The team’s only win under Masood came against England at home, where Pakistan won 2-1. They also lost series against South Africa and West Indies and finished at the bottom of the previous World Test Championship table.Javed said that the captain should also share his responsibility for the progress of the team.“The captain has the responsibility to finish the game,” said Javed. “Some things are the responsibility of the team, some are the responsibility of the selectors, some are the responsibility of the captain. The driver’s role also includes maintaining the team’s balance, taking DRS decisions and making calls accordingly. “Despite the team’s struggles, Masood scored consistently and batted. During his captaincy, he hit two centuries and seven centuries, including back-to-back fifties in Melbourne against Australia.Babar’s first term as Test captain saw him win 10 in 20 matches. His reign began with a 2-0 win at home to South Africa, as Pakistan completed their clean sweep against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. As a captain, Babar scored more than 50 runs in every innings in Test cricket. Their only defeat at home came against England, who beat Pakistan 3-0.Babar’s second term as captain will begin with a two-Test series against the West Indies later this month.Masood retained his place in Pakistan’s 16-man squad for the series. Saud Shakeel joins the team as the 17th player in the three-Test series for England after the West Indies tour, who is fit.The team also has four uncapped players: left-arm bowler Ali Usman, right-arm batsman Awais Zafar, right-arm pacer Ubaid Shah and wicketkeeper-batsman Ghazi Ghori.
