New Delhi: The national selection committee has decided to bench Sanju Samson in the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe starting July 23. Ishan Kishan has been given the role of lead wicketkeeper while Prabhsimran Singh has received a maiden call-up. TOI understands that the selectors have rested Samson for now to give more opportunities to youngsters waiting in the wings.Sources told TOI that the effort is to get young batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi more exposure at the top level and the series against Zimbabwe is a good opportunity to do so. BCCI has been on the same page. “It will look odd if a great player like Samson is given the opportunity to travel. It is important to remember that Samson is already in the Asian Games team as he will travel in the last week of September. Ishan is the wicketkeeper who likes to lead the team. As is the case when standards are lowered. The team needs good players, not wicketkeepers who are filling in,” a BCCI source told TOI. “Over the past decade, the Zimbabwean tour has been used to focus on bench strength. Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Harshit Rana have been given time off. The bowling line-up is a new look,” the source added. The organization is to give Sooryavanshi exposure to as many countries as possible. The Indian team management fielded the 15-year-old in place of Samson in the second T20I against England in Manchester on Saturday. They want batsmen in special positionsApart from a three-match knock in the T20 World Cup triumph in March, Samson’s consistency has been questionable. He scored just one run in the last three T20Is for Ireland and England. The selectors and team management feel that playing both Samson and Ishan has removed the entire middle order from their position. Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and Axar Patel are not batting in their respective positions and it has affected the comeback with Varma and Axar looking outside the comfort zone. The selectors are looking to encourage the lower middle order to finish strong in the T20 team.
