New Delhi: On a day when India topped the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) global list of doping violators, the Sports Ministry confirmed that the National Anti-Doping Bill will be tabled in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. In the AIU list, India ranked 162, ahead of Kenya (148) and Russia (60). It includes individuals who are preventing doping violations by testing for prohibited substances and/or tampering, test evasion, smuggling, or missing persons.Under the amended bill, the sale and distribution of prohibited substances to athletes will be punishable by up to five years in prison.“Until now, athletes have been punished for such crimes. They would have received a suspension or ban. But we need to track those who give them the drugs, including the doctors,” said the Ministry official. The public consultation period on the revised bill ended on June 18. The Monsoon Session of Parliament will begin on July 20.The change is similar to what happened in 2018. At that time, four years in prison and a fine of Rs 2 lakh were demanded for gangs and anyone found guilty of providing prohibited substances to athletes. However, the law was removed from the bill passed in 2022 and amended last year when the government agreed with the idea of ”restrictive law, not criminal law.”India has also topped the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list for the past three years.
