Superman has been a staple of cinema for more than four decades, with many actors playing the iconic role in different eras and universes. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the character, navigating his film catalog can be confusing. According to DC’s official guide, the Superman films do not follow a universal continuity, which means that the best way to view them is in order of release, grouped by creative periods that define each actor’s portrayal of the character.
The era of Christopher Reeve. ‘Superman’ (1978) to ‘Superman IV. The Quest for Peace’ (1987)
The journey began with the 1978 film ‘Superman,’ directed by Richard Donner and based on a story by Mario Puzo. This was the first appearance of Superman on the big screen, setting the standard for future superhero movies. Christopher Reeve’s portrayal introduces the audience to the origin story of Clark Kent and his adoptive parents in Kansas. The film also features Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor and Marlon Brando as Superman’s biological father, Jor-El.
The era of Brandon Routh. Superman Returns (2006)
After a 19-year gap, Superman returned to theaters with ‘Superman Returns’ in 2006. Brandon Routh played the role of the Man of Steel in this film that acted as a loose continuation of the first two Reeve films while ignoring the later sequels. The main plot of the film focuses on Superman’s return to Earth after a long absence and his complicated relationship with Lois Lane.
The Henry Cavill Years: ‘Man of Steel’ (2013) to ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ (2021)
The 2013 film ‘Man of Steel’ was the transformation of a new era of Superman on the big screen. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, presenting a new, darker and modern origin story. Unlike the optimistic tone of Reeve’s films, ‘Man of Steel’ explores themes of loneliness and the burden of power. The latest round begins with ‘Batman v Superman. Dawn of Justice’ (2016), which pits Superman against Batman over the government’s attempts to control his powers. The film also introduces other DC heroes like Wonder Woman and sets up the events for the larger DC Extended Universe.

‘Justice League’ (2017) followed, bringing Superman together with other DC heroes to face an alien threat. This film was especially troubled by the change of directors mid-production from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon. In 2021, ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ will be released on HBO Max, representing the director’s original vision for the film.
The era of James Gunn. ‘Superman’ (2025) up
James Gunn reinvents the DC Universe with a new film ‘Superman’ released in 2025, which includes David Corenswet in the title role. This marks the beginning of a new era for the character, with many villains including The Engineer and Ultraman.
