Shocked by a crushing defeat to South Africa that brought their campaign to a screeching halt, India responded in style, defeating Zimbabwe by 72 runs before qualifying for the World Cup.Five months later, the two sides met again under very different circumstances. India arrive in Harare after back-to-back T20I series wins in Ireland and England, with new captain Shreyas Iyer still looking for his first victory. The three-match series, starting on Thursday, gives the world champions a chance to arrest their slide and restore confidence.Having lost six of his first seven matches as T20I captain, Iyer knows that results need to change quickly.“We had a rough patch in England, but there were a lot of positives. We understood what we needed to build as a team going forward and the kind of awareness and flexibility needed at this level,” Iyer said on Wednesday.The focus will also be on young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Harare is where the 15-year-old announced himself at international level with a stunning 175 off 80 balls against England in the U-19 World Cup final in January. Fellow opener Abhishek Sharma also has fond memories here, having scored his maiden T20I hundred in 2024.Sooryavanshi, however, comes into the list under scrutiny after a difficult debut tour in England, where the 14th, 13th and 15th overs showed his difficulties against the high pace, especially Jofra Archer. Zimbabwean captain Sikandar Raza has urged patience with the young man.“If a 15-year-old is playing international cricket, criticism after two or three matches is not appropriate. Vaibhav is a very talented cricketer and can be a natural talent if managed properly,” Raza said.The series is important for several Indian players who want to revive their T20 careers. Vice-captain Tilak Varma will be looking to regain form after disappointing performances in Ireland and England, while Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh, both back in the set-up, will look to cement their place.India’s revamped attack, which includes Prince Yadav, the returning Mayank Yadav, Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur, will also come under the scanner. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi hopes to overcome his off-ball woes as he works with bowling coach for this series, former Indian left-arm spinner, Sunil Joshi.Zimbabwe will enter the tournament with confidence after recent victories over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as well as a memorable performance against Australia in the 2026 T20 World Cup. It is the experienced Raza leading the way and speeding up Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava who are able to take advantage of the home advantage, who have the opportunity to test the Indian side outside the national team.Raza believes that India’s aggressive approach could give Zimbabwe an opportunity to pull off another surprise.
