'My best wishes to the Indian players': PM Modi's message to Team India ahead of CWG 2026

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the Indian athletes success ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, expressing confidence that the athletes would compete with determination and inspire the country. India begin their campaign on Thursday with a 124-man squad looking to put in a strong performance despite the tournament’s short programme.“As the Commonwealth Games #Glasgow2026 begin, my best wishes to the Indian team,” PM Modi tweeted on X.“I am confident that our athletes will participate in these Games with passion, determination and a winning spirit. The talent and dedication of our athletes will always inspire countless Indians.”

India starts the campaign with bowl events

India’s campaign will begin with two bowl matches before the opening ceremony this afternoon. Competitions at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in four venues.Indian athletes will compete in eight sports: athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, cycling, bowls and swimming. The country’s athletes will also participate in five categories such as para-athletics, para-swimming, para-powerlifting, para-track cycling and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.

Neeraj, Mirabai leads the medal

Games will be held from July 27 to August 1, with Olympic and international champions Neeraj Chopra to lead India’s problems. He will compete in the men’s javelin final on August 1 and will be aiming to regain the Commonwealth Games gold medal after missing the 2022 edition due to injury. Chopra won the title at the 2018 Gold Coast Games.Another big medal hope for India is the professional weightlifter To Mirabai Chantwo-time Commonwealth Games champion and Olympic medalist. The weightlifting games are scheduled from July 26 to 30, and Chanu is expected to lead India’s campaign in the games.
