South African swimmer Chad le Clos made history on Friday by becoming the most decorated male athlete in Commonwealth Games history after helping his team win bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay. The medal was the 19th Commonwealth Games medal of his career, moving him ahead of Australian shooter Phil Adams and England’s Mick Gault.“I shouldn’t cry with bronze, I should cry with gold, but honestly this means the world,” Le Clos, 34, said on the Games website. With this latest win, his Commonwealth medal tally now stands at seven gold, four silver and eight bronze.
A career full of great events
Le Clos can still add to his record as he is also expected to compete in the 50m and 100m butterfly. He made his debut at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi, where, at the age of 18, he won five medals. The latest edition marks his fifth appearance at the Games.Beyond the Commonwealth sector, Le Clos has enjoyed a successful international career. She has won four Olympic medals, including one gold, and has taken part in 16 world championships, mostly in butterfly. The former swimmer is also interested in competing at the Winter Olympics when Los Angeles will host the event in 2028.
