New Delhi: Between January 2025 and June 2026, India has participated in 36 international games in more than 15 cities. In the next six months, 11 more events are planned while it is already secured to host 19 events from 2027 to 2028. These include the FIBA​​​​​​World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifier, the Wushu Commonwealth Championship and the Asia Para Cup Leg 2 in Archery, all in Ahmedabad which is India’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics.At the recent International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session, a new selection process was approved. In 2024, India submitted their letter of intent to host the 2036 Games.According to the new system under the leadership of Kirsty Coventry, the 2036 recipient will be revealed after the vote in mid-2029. Instead of the sports ministry, the responsibility of leading India will be on the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the Government of Gujarat and the athletes.The IOC has added a Strategic Dialogue session between the Continuing Dialogue and the final sessions of the Targeted Dialogue with relevant groups. In the Strategic Dialogue phase the selected cities must provide a “financial guarantee” among other requirements.The selected cities must also meet requirements related to cost control, and provide a deadline for the project among other things. India is currently in the phase of Continuous Dialogue.Other countries that have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics include Qatar, Turkey and South Africa.‘Offices will be very high quality’Another event in the next six months is the BWF World Championship at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from August 17. The facility was criticized in January during the India Open for its poor condition and lack of cleanliness when bird droppings and stray monkeys visited.“The aim is to ensure that the working environment is of the highest quality [sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya] It is following the plan,” it explained.After the India Open, the sports ministry took steps to implement maintenance plans for Sports Authority of India (SAI) infrastructure, such as the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, including quarterly reviews of the facility.
