Legendary playback singer S. Janaki was laid to rest with full state honors at his family home in Kaniyanahundi on HD Kote Road in Mysuru on Sunday evening. The iconic singer died on July 12 at the age of 88 after suffering multiple cardiac arrests while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru. His mortal remains were kept at the Maharaja’s College Grounds before the last rites, where thousands of admirers, members of the film fraternity, musicians and political leaders gathered to pay their last respects. The funeral was held in his hometown of Mysuru in his later years, as per his last wish.
Apsara An emotional tribute to his grandmother
Addressing the media during the final ceremonies, S. Janaki:Granddaughter, Apsara, paid a touching tribute to the legendary singer. “It is a great loss, not only to our family, but to the entire country and the entire world,” he said, as reported by The Indian Express. Recalling Janaki’s unparalleled talent, Apsara added, “She has the most expressive kind of singing. Everyone who listens to her music knows that.” He also described his grandmother as very unique, saying, “My grandmother was one of a kind. Anyone who knew him would tell you how special he was. He’s an incredible talent.” His heartfelt words reflect the deep admiration and love the family continues to hold for the music legend.
A loving grandmother beyond the legendary voice
While the world celebrates S. Janaki as one of India’s greatest playback singers, Apsara says she will always remember her first as a family. “I will remember her as my grandmother, kind, generous, and full of love and laughter,” he shared. Apsara also spoke about the life lessons she received from Janaki, saying they went beyond music and fame. “I’m honored to be her granddaughter. I learned a lot from her, not just as a celebrity, but as my grandmother,” he said. He also fondly recalls Janaki’s deep affection for animals, describing it as one of the qualities he admired most.

There is no goodbye,” he said. Throughout his career spanning over six decades, S. Janaki has sung more than 40,000 songs in several Indian languages ​​and has been honored with four National Film Awards along with many other accolades.
