England’s search for a new Test coach has come a long way IPL flavor, and several of the world’s best coaches are in the running to replace Brendon McCullum after he was sacked.Former England coach and current head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru Andy Flower will lead the nine-man list that also includes former Chennai Super Kings boss Stephen Fleming, Lucknow Super Giants’ Justin Langer and Tom Moody, underscoring the ECB’s preference for experienced coaches with a proven track record in international and franchise cricket.According to a report by the Daily Mail, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wants to choose McCullum’s replacement before the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19, although officials are prepared to take as long as necessary to secure the right candidate ahead of next year’s Ashes.
The events of the IPL dominate the ECB’s thinking
Flower, who coached England between 2009 and 2014, appears to be the preferred choice despite the odds that may arise due to his performances with RCB in the IPL and London Spirit in The Hundred. The 58-year-old is said to be reconsidering whether he wants to return to one of the world cricket’s biggest names.Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming once again became a major contender after ending his 18-year association with CSK. Fleming had previously rejected England’s offer before McCullum was selected in 2022 due to his long-term commitment to the IPL, but his presence has attracted the interest of the ECB.Former Australian coach Justin Langer, who is currently associated with Lucknow Super Giants, is another prominent name on the shortlist. Langer was considered during his previous recruitment drive but was believed to be out of favor after leading Australia to victory in the Ashes. His restrained coaching style is seen as a solution to England’s recent problems.Lucknow Super Giants international cricket director Tom Moody, Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara, and former RCB director Mike Hesson are also among the overseas suitors. Hesson, who currently coaches Pakistan’s national football team, says he has attracted interest despite his international commitments.
Only two English people make the cut
Despite the ECB’s emphasis on finding the best coach regardless of country, only two English-based candidates were selected.Former England all-rounder Jonathan Trott has added to his record of success against Afghanistan, leading his side to the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Trott has made it clear that he wants to coach England.Richard Dawson, the former England spinner, is also a home contender after impressing for Glamorgan, who also led him to Division One of the County Championship. The shortlist also includes former Ireland and Hampshire coach Adi Birrell, while India captain Rahul Dravid and England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff are reportedly not included in the final list. The ECB has already started contacting candidates, but with England having lost seven of their last nine Tests, the body is prioritizing a long-term appointment that could rebuild the side ahead of the Ashes, even if it means naming a long-term coach – assistant Marcus Trescothick – in the Pakistan squad.
