16-year-old Lisha Das, India’s only Commonwealth Games cyclist, has written to the country’s sports authorities, saying the uncertainty of staff and transport options in Glasgow has left her “very upset” ahead of the Games.Lisha has sent an email to the officials of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and Sports Ministry.The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games will be held on Thursday night.In her letter, Lisha said she is still waiting for clarity on the acceptance of her support team, which includes personal trainer Aditya Mehta, female physiotherapist Dr Asha Shaikh and a professional motorcyclist.Although Shaikh’s visit was canceled after repeated requests and court intervention, there is no confirmation about Mehta’s visit or legitimacy. Instead, the authorities have suggested K Dattatraya as an expert/coach, even though Lisha had earlier refused to be included in his support team.Lisha said she asked Mehta to travel with her as a teacher. Although the request was accepted at first, he never heard anything about his visit.“I am writing this email with a very heavy heart and great stress. As an athlete, my only responsibility should be to focus on my studies and prepare to represent my country to the best of my ability. However, since May 15, I have been continuously trying to reach the authorities concerned and seek clarity and support regarding my participation and the Commonwealth Games,” wrote the Commonwealth organization.“I did not start looking for financial support for years of training, equipment, preparation and qualifications that have helped me to reach this level. My teacher (Mehta) and his organization supported me personally, including my training, equipment and preparation. Although I repeatedly communicated with reminders, instead of receiving it clearly, I have been experiencing constant uncertainty and great emotional stress,” he added.Mehta has now decided to organize the entire support team himself.“Lisha is the youngest Indian and the first para cyclist to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, and she is also the first Indian female para cyclist to achieve this qualification. However, instead of being allowed to consider representing the country, this young athlete is now forced to fight for leadership alone,” Mehta told PTI.“But they don’t give up. Lisha will definitely move forward,” he added.Lisha said the uncertainty had affected her planning and left her “very upset”.“Yesterday, the authorities questioned me again through a video on my teacher’s phone. I made it clear that I am young and that my teacher and Dr Shaikh are my caretakers and assistants who have been directly involved in my education, care and preparation.“I asked them to discuss any matter concerning me directly with them.“I have been trying to focus on my studies and the competition. However, repeated uncertainties, calls, messages and administrative obstacles have caused a lot of stress at a time when I have to prepare to compete and win medals for my country,” he wrote.Lisha also said that Mehta’s role as her teacher had already been recorded in the Delhi High Court case.“Despite the trial court and the orders issued by the Supreme Court, I have been faced with suspicions, repeated communication and what I feel has been emotional distress in the same matter of my teacher and support group.“I fail to understand why, despite the fact that this matter is in the Supreme Court and the way my coach is listed in the courts, I am still under suspicion and pressure immediately before an important international competition,” he said.He also explained that he has no objection to Dattatraya going as a professional but insisted that his role cannot replace that of his teacher.“If K. Dattatraya is being sent as an expert, I am not against his work as an expert. However, I need my teacher, Aditya Mehta, to accompany me as my teacher, along with any necessary expert or other support staff.“A professional and a teacher have different roles and responsibilities, and they cannot be treated as interchangeable,” he wrote.Lisha also said that if Mehta is not allowed to accompany her, she will arrange the trip herself.He warned that he “will not travel under the banner or financial support of the Government of India, SAI, PCI or CFI”.“I will make my own transportation and travel with my own money,” he said.Lisha also said that “I have not received any help from the Government of India, SAI, PCI or CFI for the competition, equipment and preparation that I have reached this level”.“I respectfully request that the organizations involved do not claim any money for my achievements. I also request that my photos and images not be used in advertising or marketing without my permission.”
