New Delhi: President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Arkady Dvorkovich has resigned after being included in the latest list of the European Union regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This decision refers to the Vice President of FIDE and the world champion Viswanathan Anand he will serve as interim president until the sanctions are lifted or lifted.In a statement released by FIDE, Dvorkovich described the sanctions as unfair and vowed to challenge them through legal channels. However, he said his decision to temporarily suspend operations was taken to ensure the smooth running of the world governing body.“Today, the decision of the EU to include my name in the list of 21 sanctions was published. I want to say frankly that I think this decision is unacceptable and unjust, and this decision will be immediately opposed by all possible means. I am confident that justice will prevail,” the FIDE statement reads.He added that remaining in office while under sanctions would interfere with FIDE’s day-to-day operations.“However, considering that until a court decision is issued and/or this decision is removed or modified, these sanctions may hinder the functioning of FIDE, I have decided to voluntarily stop exercising my powers and duties as FIDE President as soon as possible and for as long as I remain subject to EU and Swiss laws and regulations.”Under Article 19.2 of the FIDE Charter, Anand will now assume the role of Interim President. The FIDE Council approved Dvorkovich’s decision and confirmed that he will not have presidential powers or control over the federation or its assets while the sanctions are still in effect.
AICF welcomes Anand’s new position
The move was welcomed by All India Chess Federation (AICF) President Nitin Narang, who expressed confidence in Anand’s leadership.“As FIDE moves into permanent leadership, I will extend my best wishes to Vice President Viswanathan Anand as he assumes the role of Interim President,” he wrote on X.“Mr. Vishy has earned the respect of the world chess community for his integrity, wisdom and lifelong service to our game. I am confident that under his leadership, FIDE will continue to maintain stability, good governance and its commitment to players and organizations around the world.”The EU’s 21st sanctions package targets 170 organizations and 48 individuals with measures including suspension of goods and travel bans. Despite the change in leadership, FIDE said its activities, festivals and cultural programs will continue without interruption.
India of Chess Olympiad squads announced
Meanwhile, India has also announced its teams for the FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, which will be held from September 17 to 27. Defense India will be led by international captain D Gukesh, along with R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi in the open division, while Koneru Humpy will lead the women’s team with R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal and Savitha Shriwal.
