Veteran actor and legendary dancer Helen shares fascinating details about the effort that went into creating some of Bollywood’s most memorable dance moves.Speaking during an episode of India’s Best Dancer, she revealed that she personally sourced many of the accessories that became synonymous with her glamorous cabaret numbers.Helen said she always wanted her costumes to feel unique. Instead of relying on locally available accessories, he traveled abroad to find items that would give his shows a distinct visual identity.
Helen goes to Paris to get real feathers
Recalling her preparations for the dance numbers, Helen explained that she took a hands-on approach to every detail of her appearance. He personally selected accessories and fashion elements that were not common in India at that time.She said, “I went to London and brought back colored lenses of blue, brown, green with special eyelashes. My headgear was made by my hairdresser, and I even went to Paris to get real feathers for my costumes. My jewelry, giant goggles, and accessories were all chosen to be ahead of the times.”

She noted that her bold costumes, elegant performances and confident screen presence changed how glamor was presented in Hindi films. According to him, he set new trends while inspiring generations of performers. Karisma Kapoor also shared a memory passed down by her mother. He said, “My mother told me that every time Helen Ji entered the set, a respectful silence fell over everyone, as if Shammi Kapoor arrived.”Karisma further revealed that Helen is known for quickly learning choreography during rehearsals, earning praise for her professionalism and natural ability.

Helen’s elaborate costumes became one of the defining visual signatures of classic Hindi cinema. Some of his most famous songs include ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’ from Caravan, ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’ from Sholay, and many other chart toppers. Although he made occasional appearances over the years, his last major film role came: Madhur Bhandarkar‘Heroes’ (2012).
