Commonwealth Games 2026 Opening Ceremony Live Changes: India banks on boxing, athletics and weightlifting to extend fifth run of CWG

The cancellation of wrestling, badminton, table tennis and shooting has affected India’s medal hopes. The four sports alone took 25 of India’s 61 medals at the Birmingham Games in 2022.

This leaves sports, boxing and weightlifting to take the lead.

India has sent a 32-member athletics team, the largest among all disciplines, to compete in 22 events.

The team is led by two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra, who goes into the tournament without being a fan.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga won the men’s javelin after throwing 92.62m to win the Rome Diamond League last month. Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem is also in the field, although Chopra remains among the contenders.

India will also look to sprinter Sarvesh Kushare, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, and both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams for medals.

The athletics team won eight medals in Birmingham, although that tally may prove difficult against strong competition.

Weightlifting, one of India’s regular medal-winning sports, will also revolve around Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu.

The 31-year-old is aiming for a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal and remains one of India’s strongest medal hopefuls.

India’s weightlifting team has been reduced to 11 members after several of the country’s athletes came back with dope tests, reducing the country’s medal chances in one of the most successful Commonwealth Games.
