Legendary playback singer S Janaki, popularly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” died at the age of 88 at Apollo Hospital in Mysuru after suffering from age-related health complications.He was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of the day after his recovery.According to the Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, press release he was admitted on July 11 at 12:49 pm. “Despite intense medical care and constant monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, he suffered cardiac arrest during treatment,” reads the press release.He was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.Condolences poured in from political leaders across party lines, who remembered the veteran singer for his unparalleled contribution to Indian music.

We grew up listening to Kannada songs in her voice. She embodied the sweetness of the beauty of Kannada,” said Shivakumar.Recalling her contribution, he added, “Janakamma was the embodiment of simplicity. Her incomparable voice will remain immortal in the culture of Karnataka forever. Although she was originally from Andhra Pradesh, her love for Kannada led her to settle in Mysuru.
